Humanitarian Eid initiative for Sylhet ground staff wins praise – Sylhet Cricket Community Honors Ground Staff with Humanitarian Eid Initiative
A Gesture of Appreciation for the Unsung Heroes of Sylhet Cricket
In the world of cricket, while the spotlight almost always shines on the players and the captains, the success of any match relies heavily on the diligent efforts of the ground staff. Recognizing this, a group of former cricketers and dedicated sports organizers in Sylhet recently launched a humanitarian initiative to honor the workers of the Sylhet District Sports Association ahead of the festive season of Eid.
The initiative, which involved the distribution of Eid gifts worth BDT 100,000, served as a powerful gesture of appreciation for the laborers who work behind the scenes to maintain the pitches and facilities. By ensuring the grounds are always match-ready, these workers provide the essential foundation upon which local sporting dreams are built.
Prominent Figures Unite for a Noble Cause
The distribution event was graced by notable figures in the sports and legal communities, highlighting the significance of the act. Among the attendees was former Bangladesh national cricket team captain Rajin Saleh, whose presence underscored the deep respect the professional cricketing fraternity holds for ground staff. Also in attendance was Syed Fazla Elahi Obhi, an executive committee member of the Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association, who lent his support to the initiative.
The event also saw participation from key representatives of the local cricket administration, including Sylhet First Division Cricket League secretary Kabir Ahmed, vice president Khubeb Ahmed, joint secretary Evan Chowdhury, and district cricket coach Rana Mia.
More Than Just a Job: A Personal Connection
During the event, the speakers emphasized that the initiative was about more than just financial support—it was about recognizing the humanity and dignity of the workers. Syed Fazla Elahi Obhi remarked on the critical role these individuals play, stating, “Ground workers quietly play a very important role in keeping sports facilities and activities running smoothly. This initiative is our way of recognizing their contribution and sharing the joy of Eid with them.”
For Rajin Saleh, the bond is deeply personal. Reflecting on his own career, the former captain shared, “My cricket journey started from this very ground. Because of that, many of the ground workers feel like family to me. My connection with them is not only through cricket, but also from the heart.” This sentiment resonated throughout the room, emphasizing that the relationship between players and staff is built on years of shared history and mutual respect.
A Commitment to Sustainable Support
The initiative is not intended to be a one-off event. Kabir Ahmed, speaking on behalf of the Sylhet First Division Cricket League, reaffirmed the organization’s ongoing commitment to the workforce. “Since the beginning of the league, we promised to give ground workers the respect they truly deserve. This initiative is part of continuing that commitment,” Ahmed noted.
The local sports community has widely praised this move, viewing it as a model for how sports associations should treat their support staff. By prioritizing the welfare of those who maintain the fields, the Sylhet District Sports Association is setting a commendable precedent. As the community prepares for the upcoming Eid celebrations, the spirit of togetherness and gratitude remains the central focus, ensuring that those who work hard to make the game possible feel truly valued and supported.
This heartwarming initiative stands as a testament to the fact that the spirit of cricket extends far beyond the boundary ropes, rooting itself firmly in the values of compassion, community, and mutual respect.
