Mosaddek Hossain’s dream comeback leaves Bangladesh selectors delighted
Mosaddek Hossain’s Dream Comeback
Mosaddek Hossain’s return to international cricket could hardly have gone any better. After spending four years out of the national team, the all-rounder grabbed his opportunity with both hands and delivered a performance that immediately reminded everyone of his value.
His successful comeback has also reignited discussions about Bangladesh’s selection decisions. Was recalling Mosaddek a gamble that paid off, or did the selectors always believe he could make an impact?
The Debate Surrounding Mosaddek’s Selection
The debate exists because Mosaddek had largely fallen out of the national team picture in recent years. Former chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu had previously stated that Mosaddek’s chances were limited as long as Mehidy Hasan Miraz remained in the side.
Ironically, it was under Miraz’s captaincy that Mosaddek made his ODI comeback and he did so in style.
Current Chief Selector’s Thoughts
However, current chief selector Habibul Bashar Sumon does not see it as a challenge won by the selection panel. According to him, the selectors were always confident about Mosaddek’s abilities and recent form.
Bashar admitted that they expected him to perform well, but even they were surprised by how quickly he made an impact. “I wouldn’t call it a challenge,” Bashar said. “We were very clear about his ability. He has been in excellent form over the last few seasons. Personally, I don’t only look at statistics, I also look at quality. We were all confident about him. He is an experienced player who has played for Bangladesh before.”
“What surprised us was how well he performed in his very first match back. We expected him to do well, but maybe not this quickly. There was never any doubt about his ability. I wouldn’t say we won a challenge. Instead, the team now has another strong option available.”
Mosaddek’s Spectacular Return
Mosaddek announced his return in spectacular fashion during the first ODI against Australia on June 9. He was named Player of the Match after smashing an unbeaten 86 from 70 balls and picking up two wickets with the ball. The all-rounder also bowled his full quota of 10 overs, conceding only 37 runs and delivering a maiden over.
In the second ODI, however, he was not used as a bowler, a decision that drew criticism from some fans and observers who questioned captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s tactics. Mosaddek still played a role with the bat, coming in during the closing stages of Bangladesh’s chase. He scored 15 runs from 14 balls before being dismissed.
