Gaikwad Praises CSK’s Resilience in Challenging IPL 2026 Season

CSK’s Grit Shines Through a Turbulent IPL 2026 Campaign

What began with a string of early defeats and injury setbacks ended as a testament to resilience. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) may have missed out on the IPL 2026 playoffs after an 89-run loss to Gujarat Titans (GT), but captain Ruturaj Gaikwad is far from disappointed.

Reflecting on a season of highs and harsh setbacks, Gaikwad described the campaign as a proud chapter in CSK’s ongoing transition phase. With six wins and eight losses from 14 matches, the team’s journey was anything but straightforward — yet it revealed character, ambition, and promising signs for the future.

From Rough Start to Mid-Season Momentum

CSK stumbled early, losing their first three matches. But once the squad found its rhythm, they surged forward — winning six of their next eight games. The formula? Stability, cohesion, and players settling into their roles.

“Well, tough season to start, especially the hat-trick of losses,” Gaikwad admitted. “Then, once we found that momentum, guys were playing in the right spots, the right combination clicked, and everything started working.”

That upward trajectory, however, was derailed by injuries at the worst possible time — particularly to key seam-bowling allrounders Jamie Overton and Ramakrishna Ghosh. Their absence disrupted the balance of the playing XI, forcing CSK to operate short-staffed in crucial final games.

“We were always playing a batter short or a bowler short in the last three games,” Gaikwad noted. “Missing out on Jamie and Ramakrishna unsettled our playing 12. It didn’t help much.”

Missed Chances Against Sunrisers Hyderabad

Two encounters with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) stood out as turning points. In Hyderabad, CSK collapsed chasing a modest 84 runs in 10 overs with seven wickets in hand. Days later at home, they nearly defended 181, only for Ishan Kishan’s blistering 47-ball 70 to snatch victory from their grasp.

Both games exposed lapses in execution under pressure — moments Gaikwad called “missed opportunities.”

“We could have just got over the line,” he said. “Failed to do that, but still — very much proud.”

Building a Young Core for the Future

Gone are the days when CSK relied solely on seasoned veterans. This season marked a deliberate shift, with eight to ten players having under 20 IPL appearances. Names like Kartik Sharma and Urvil Patel emerged, gaining invaluable experience in high-stakes matches.

Kartik, in particular, impressed with his composure and skill. Urvil, playing his first full season, showed glimpses of promise despite the weight of expectations.

“Moving on from the likes of Ajinkya Rahane or Ambati Rayudu, we’re now giving opportunities to youngsters,” Gaikwad explained. “Kartik has a lot of potential. Urvil has a bright future. Even Brev [Dewald Brevis] showed what he can do when given the chance.”

The Lingering Question: MS Dhoni‘s Future

One name loomed large all season — MS Dhoni. The franchise icon didn’t feature in a single match, sidelined by injury. At 45, questions about his retirement persist, but Gaikwad remains diplomatically silent.

“You’ll get to know it next year itself. You and I will get to know it next year itself,” he said with a smile. “He’s someone who instills fear in the opposition. Just by staying at the crease in the death overs, he changes the game’s momentum.”

His absence was deeply felt. But Gaikwad emphasized the positives — the hunger in the squad, the learning curve, and the foundation now laid for 2027.

Looking Ahead: A Season of Growth

While the trophy remained out of reach, Gaikwad’s pride is justified. CSK kept their fate in their hands until the final league game — a feat few expected after a disastrous start.

The 2026 season wasn’t just about results. It was about evolution. About trusting youth. About enduring adversity. And about proving that even in transition, the core values of CSK endure.

Next year? Expect a hungrier, sharper, and more balanced side. The foundation has been laid — and the belief remains unshaken.
