The Pitch Controversy Put to Rest

The stage is set at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad for the IPL 2026 Final. With the Gujarat Titans (GT) set to take on the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the conversation has naturally shifted toward the playing conditions. Questions regarding whether the home side would manipulate the surface to suit their spinners or pacers have been circulating, but former Indian cricket legend Virender Sehwag has provided much-needed clarity on the matter.

Sehwag has definitively stated that BCCI will prepare pitch: GT denied home advantage in IPL 2026 Final, confirms the veteran during a recent interaction. This intervention by the board is aimed at ensuring that the playing surface remains neutral, stripping away any potential tactical edge the Shubman Gill-led side might have hoped to gain from playing at their home ground.

Why the BCCI is Stepping In

Historically, franchise teams in the IPL have held significant influence over the preparation of pitches at their home venues. This localized control has often led to accusations of unfair advantages. However, the final is a different beast altogether. Sehwag explained that because of the magnitude of the event, the governing body takes full control.

“This is GT’s home ground, but because it’s a final, they can’t make any pitch that they want, so they won’t get that advantage. Since it’s a final, it will be the BCCI that will prepare the wicket, so it’s a level playing field,” Sehwag noted during his analysis on Cricbuzz. This move effectively neutralizes the concerns raised by various coaches and analysts earlier in the season regarding pitch tampering.

A Tale of Two Titans

The 2026 season has been nothing short of spectacular for both finalists. Both the Gujarat Titans and Royal Challengers Bengaluru finished the league stage with identical records, winning 9 out of their 14 fixtures. RCB secured the top spot on the points table primarily due to a superior net run rate, showcasing their dominance throughout the campaign.

The two teams have faced off multiple times this season, each match providing a glimpse into their tactical evolution. In the league stage at Bengaluru, Virat Kohli’s brilliant 81 helped RCB chase down a daunting target of 205, despite a resilient century from Sai Sudharsan. Later, at Ahmedabad, the Titans roared back with a clinical bowling display, anchored by Rashid Khan and Arshad Khan, to restrict RCB and chase down a modest 155.

The Qualifier 1 Dominance

However, the most recent encounter in Qualifier 1 at Dharamsala was a one-sided affair. RCB routed the Titans by 92 runs, a performance that highlighted their current form. Rajat Patidar was the star of the show, smashing an unbeaten 93 off just 33 balls, aided by a crucial 95-run partnership with Krunal Pandya. Their late-order explosion added 114 runs in the final six overs, completely demoralizing the Gujarat bowling attack.

Reflecting on this, Sehwag emphasized that the final is a 50-50 contest, though he admitted the Titans would need to produce something special to overcome the current RCB juggernaut. “The kind of cricket that RCB are playing, and have been playing, has been quite exceptional. GT will have to play the kind of cricket they did in Qualifier 2 to get the better of RCB in the final,” he added.

Historical Significance at Ahmedabad

The Narendra Modi Stadium holds a unique place in the hearts of both franchises. It was here that the Gujarat Titans lifted their maiden trophy in 2022, marking a dream start to their journey. Conversely, RCB secured their first-ever IPL title at this very venue in 2025, ending an 18-year wait. With both teams having experienced both triumph and heartbreak on this pitch, the neutral surface prepared by the BCCI promises an epic conclusion to an unforgettable season of cricket.

As the players take the field, all eyes will be on the 22 yards. With the BCCI overseeing the curation, the fans can expect a classic contest where skill, temperament, and execution—rather than home-field tactics—will ultimately decide the champions of IPL 2026.
