Despite this clear legal framework, both Riyan Parag and Yuzvendra Chahal were observed using vapes during the IPL 2026 tournament, constituting a direct violation of both national law and the BCCI’s code of conduct.
The specific incidents involved Riyan Parag being captured vaping inside the dressing room during a match between Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings. Separately, Yuzvendra Chahal was reportedly seen engaging in similar conduct on a flight while traveling with his Punjab Kings teammates. These occurrences, documented and brought to the attention of the authorities, underscored a concerning lapse in player discipline and adherence to regulations.
Penalties Issued and Warnings Issued
The BCCI acted promptly regarding Riyan Parag’s misconduct. The all-rounder, who also captains the Rajasthan Royals, faced a penalty of 25 percent of his match fees and was handed one demerit point for his actions in the dressing room. This immediate sanction served as a clear signal of the BCCI’s zero-tolerance policy towards such violations.
While Yuzvendra Chahal’s case has yet to result in a formal sanction, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia has issued a stern warning to all participants of IPL 2026. Saikia emphasized that severe consequences await any individual found engaging in similar misconduct in the future. BCCI Issues Comprehensive Directives: Vaping Strictly Banned in IPL Venues

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia subsequently issued an extensive eight-page directive to all IPL franchises, mandating strict adherence to protocols by both players and support staff.
In the official press release, Saikia unequivocally stated that any act of vaping during the IPL would be considered a serious violation of both BCCI and IPL regulations. Furthermore, he highlighted the broader legal implications, reminding participants that since the Indian government has banned the usage of vapes and electronic cigarettes, offenders would also be subject to punishment under the applicable statutory framework.
Saikia’s directive explicitly warned, “Instances of vaping within dressing room and other restricted areas of tournament venues have been brought to BCCI’s attention. It is pertinent to note that vapes and electronic cigarettes is prohibited under applicable Indian Law. Any individual found engaging in such conduct within tournament premises is not only violating BCCI and IPL regulations but may also be committing a cognisable offence under applicable statutory framework.”
He further added, “Accordingly the use of vapes, e-cigarettes, and all prohibited substances is strictly banned within all IPL tournament venues, including dressing rooms, dugouts, team hotels and practice facilities.” This comprehensive ban covers all areas associated with the tournament, leaving no room for ambiguity regarding permissible conduct.
Ensuring Professionalism: BCCI Extends Restrictions to Hotel Rooms
Beyond the immediate issue of vaping, the BCCI has also implemented additional measures to uphold professionalism and prevent potential corrupt activities within the IPL 2026. A new directive prohibits the access of unauthorized persons, regardless of their relation to the players, to hotel rooms designated for team members.
Under these revised guidelines, friends and family members of players are now required to obtain explicit approval from the concerned IPL franchise’s team manager before being granted access to hotel rooms.
