Arshdeep Singh’s Form and PBKS Bowling Woes: A Reality Check in IPL 2026
The Perfect Run Halted
For the majority of the 2026 Indian Premier League season, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) have looked like an unstoppable force. Their campaign has been defined by spectacular batting displays that consistently outscored opponents. However, when the bats finally went quiet against the Rajasthan Royals on Tuesday, the team’s bowling limitations were laid bare, resulting in their first defeat of the season.
The Arshdeep Singh Dilemma
At the center of the post-match discussion is the form of Arshdeep Singh. As the leader of the PBKS pace attack, much is expected of him, yet the statistics paint a worrying picture. Through eight games, he has managed only eight wickets while conceding runs at a concerning economy rate of 10.96. Perhaps most telling is his discipline—or lack thereof—with the ball; Arshdeep has bowled 19 wides, accounting for over 10% of his total deliveries this season. No other bowler with at least 120 balls delivered comes close to that frequency.
Expert Analysis: A Matter of Concern
Cricket experts have been quick to point out that this is not just a temporary slump. Piyush Chawla, speaking on the matter, emphasized that while Arshdeep is a reliable death-overs specialist, his inability to strike with the new ball is hurting the team’s balance. Chawla noted, ‘He is somebody who is known to pick up wickets with the new ball, and that is not happening. When he picks up wickets early, he bowls a wonderful spell, but this season, he is going at almost 11 runs per over.’
Abhinav Mukund added a more nuanced perspective, noting that while he understands Arshdeep’s aggressive line-and-length strategy, the execution has been lacking. ‘A game or two games here and there, you can expect him to do badly, but it is happening most of the time. It is a matter of concern because if you look at the bigger picture—when you are going into the playoffs—then you have to think about it,’ Mukund warned.
An Eye-Opener for the Management
The loss to the Royals was described as a much-needed ‘reality check’ by the PBKS coaching staff. Fast-bowling coach James Hopes remained pragmatic, suggesting that the team needs to tidy up a few aspects of their game. Hopes acknowledged the challenges faced by fast bowlers on modern, flat tracks but remained confident in the squad’s long-term prospects.
Looking Ahead: Strategy and Adjustments
Despite the recent loss, PBKS remains in a strong position atop the table. Hopes pointed out that the team is currently experimenting with combinations, including the introduction of Lockie Ferguson and the effective utilization of spinners like Yuzvendra Chahal and Harpreet Brar. Hopes noted, ‘We went in with a slightly different look tonight, our two spinners bowled very well, and we got Lockie Ferguson into the tournament. We have a few days to regroup before we play the Gujarat Titans, and it is about getting back to work.’
Ultimately, the Punjab Kings are not panicking. One loss in a long season is expected, but the current scrutiny on Arshdeep Singh’s rhythm and the team’s propensity to leak massive totals—as seen in previous high-scoring chases—suggests that the coaching staff will be looking for tactical refinements in the coming days. Whether that involves a change in bowling plans or a shift in the usage of spin remains to be seen, but for now, the focus is squarely on ironed-out kinks before the business end of the tournament arrives.
