The Return to Roots: Arjun Tendulkar Enters Mumbai T20 League Auction

In a move that has captured the attention of cricket enthusiasts across the city, Arjun Tendulkar is all set to try his luck in the upcoming players’ auction for the Mumbai T20 League. The seam-bowling all-rounder, who has been navigating a challenging path to establish himself in the competitive Indian cricket circuit, is now eligible to join one of the regional franchises in his hometown.

Currently, Arjun is associated with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for the ongoing IPL 2026 season. His move to the Lucknow franchise came after a period with the Mumbai Indians (MI), where a lack of consistent game time prompted him to seek new opportunities. By shifting his IPL base to Lucknow, Arjun aimed to broaden his horizons and find a platform where his skills as a bowler-batter could be better utilized.

While the 26-year-old is originally from Mumbai, his professional journey has seen him represent Goa in domestic cricket. This strategic move was designed to ensure he received regular match practice and exposure, which are critical for any developing athlete. However, his desire to engage with the high-intensity cricket scene in Mumbai has led him back to the city’s regional league.

Understanding the Eligibility: Why the ‘Cooling-Off’ Period Doesn’t Apply

The announcement of Arjun’s participation raised questions regarding the Mumbai Cricket Association’s (MCA) mandates. According to standard MCA rules, any player who is originally from Mumbai but has represented a different state organization is typically required to serve a one-year cooling-off period before they can submit their name for a franchise league auction within Mumbai.

However, the MCA has clarified that this specific rule will not apply to Arjun Tendulkar. The distinction lies in the type of competition the player participated in while representing another state. Because Arjun did not participate in the T20 leagues organized by the association of the state he represented (Goa), he remains eligible for the Mumbai T20 League.

This decision aligns with broader BCCI guidelines, which seek to balance player movement with the need to prevent excessive exertion. The guidelines state: “To maintain focus and prevent excessive exertion, each player is permitted to participate in only one officially recognised cricket league, excluding the Indian Premier League (IPL), during 12 months commencing from the conclusion of the tournament in which they last participated.”

Confirming this stance, MCA secretary Unmesh Khanvilkar told the media, “Since they did not participate in the T20 league organised by the association of their respective teams, as per the BCCI rules, they are eligible to participate in the T20 Mumbai League.”

Auction Details and Base Price

The players’ auction is scheduled to take place on May 2. Based on reports from the Times of India, Arjun Tendulkar, being a recognized Ranji Trophy player, will enter the auction pool with a highest base price of INR 5 lakh. This puts him in a prime position to be picked up by franchises looking for a versatile all-rounder who can contribute with both the ball and the bat.

Siddharth Adhatrao Also Joins the Fray

Arjun is not the only player making a return to the Mumbai circuit. Siddharth Adhatrao, who previously represented Pondicherry in domestic cricket, has also been granted permission to enter the Mumbai T20 League auction. Adhatrao is officially switching back to Mumbai, expressing a deep desire to reconnect with the city’s rich cricketing culture.

“I just want to enjoy Mumbai cricket, be it First-Class, T20 Mumbai, or maidan cricket,” Adhatrao stated, highlighting the emotional and professional draw of the city’s sporting ecosystem.

A Star-Studded Fourth Season

The fourth season of this regional franchise league is shaping up to be a blockbuster event. The auction on May 2, 2026, will feature a roster of elite talent, ensuring high-octane matches and significant viewership. Some of the top stars already linked to franchises include:

    n

  • Suryakumar Yadav (Triumph Knights)
  • Shreyas Iyer (SoBo Mumbai Falcons)
  • Shivam Dube (ARCS Andheri)
  • Yashasvi Jaiswal (Bandra Blasters)
  • Sarfaraz Khan (Aakash Tigers)

The anticipation is particularly high following the previous season’s dramatic finale, where the Mumbai South Central Maratha Royals claimed the championship trophy after defeating the Shreyas Iyer-led Mumbai Falcons at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. With the addition of players like Arjun Tendulkar, the upcoming season promises to be even more competitive and captivating for cricket fans.
