Rishabh Pant Fined for Slow Over-Rate in LSG vs CSK Victory

Lucknow Super Giants captain Rishabh Pant has been fined INR 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate during his teams seven-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings in Match 59 of IPL 2026. The game, held at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow, ended with LSG chasing down CSKs 187 with 20 balls to spare, but the post-match headlines focused on disciplinary action rather than the result.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the penalty in an official statement: Rishabh Pant, Lucknow Super Giants captain, has been fined after his side maintained a slow over-rate during Match 59 of IPL 2026 against Chennai Super Kings at the Ekana Stadium on Friday.

Seventh Captain Penalized This Season

Pant is now the seventh captain this season to face financial consequences for slow over-rates, highlighting a recurring issue across teams. Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer has already been penalized twice first with a INR 12 lakh fine against Gujarat Titans, followed by a doubled INR 24 lakh sanction in their clash with CSK.

Other captains who have received fines for similar reasons include Shubman Gill, Hardik Pandya, Ajinkya Rahane, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Axar Patel, and Pat Cummins. The league continues to crack down on time-wasting, aiming to maintain pace and viewer engagement.

Mitchell Marsh Powers LSG to Comfortable Chase

After being asked to bat, Chennai Super Kings posted a competitive 187 for 6 in their 20 overs. Kartik Sharma top-scored with a 42-ball 71, while Shivam Dube provided a late spark with an unbeaten 32 off 16 balls. For LSG, Akash Singh was the standout bowler, finishing with 3 wickets for 26 runs.

Chasing 188, Lucknow got off to a flying start thanks to Mitchell Marsh, who exploded from the beginning. The right-hander was particularly aggressive against Anshul Kamboj, clobbering him for 28 runs in the fifth over including four sixes and a boundary. Marsh reached his fifty in just 21 deliveries, bringing up the milestone with a boundary off Spencer Johnson.

LSG amassed 86 runs in the powerplay, setting the tone early. Although CSK struck three quick wickets for minimal runs, hopes of a comeback were quickly dashed by Nicholas Pooran and Mukul Choudhary, who steered the innings home without further setbacks.

CSK Playoff Hopes Hanging by a Thread

Speaking after the loss, Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad reflected on the teams dwindling playoff chances. First challenge is to head home and then focus on the areas where we have to improve, he said. We have to win every remaining match.

The defeat has pushed CSK down to sixth place in the standings. With two matches left a home fixture against Sunrisers Hyderabad and an away clash with Gujarat Titans the five-time champions must win both games to reach 16 points. Even then, their qualification depends on other results, particularly hoping that Punjab Kings or Rajasthan Royals win no more than one of their remaining games.

For Lucknow, the victory offered pride but little tangible reward, as they are already out of playoff contention. However, the team continues to play with intent, showcasing their depth and match-winning capabilities.
