The Moment of Truth
The teenage opener was unveiled in India’s colours ahead of the upcoming T20I tour of Ireland and England. The BCCI shared the special moment on social media, with the caption: “Ladies & Gentlemen, the moment the nation has been waiting for has arrived! Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in #TeamIndia jersey. Witness this incredibly special moment.”
An Emotional Moment for Sooryavanshi
For Sooryavanshi, the occasion was deeply emotional. Speaking in the video, he admitted that the feeling was beyond words after years of hard work.
“Words cannot explain it. The reason I picked up the bat from day one and went to the ground for practice, that dream has now been fulfilled. The biggest step in that journey was completed today. I truly cannot put this feeling into words,” Sooryavanshi said.
A Dream Come True
The youngster also revealed how seeing the India jersey left him overwhelmed with joy.
“It felt like a dream when I saw that T-shirt. I couldn’t stop smiling. Sometimes things happen that you never imagined could happen. When it finally does, you don’t know how to react. That was exactly how I felt,”* he added.
A Stellar Performance
Sooryavanshi’s selection comes after an incredible run of performances across different levels of cricket. He earned his maiden India call-up for the T20I tour of Europe and the upcoming Asian Games after consistently delivering with the bat.
The left-hander recently bounced back in style during the Tri-Nation Series final against Sri Lanka A. After a few modest scores earlier in the tournament, he blasted 94 runs off just 29 balls in a breathtaking innings that included a flurry of boundaries. The knock also saw him register the fastest List A half-century.
Past Achievements
Earlier this year, Sooryavanshi starred in the Under-19 World Cup final with a sensational 175 off just 80 balls against England, helping India lift the title. He carried that form into the IPL as well, wherein he hit an impeccable 97 against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator to keep Rajasthan Royals’ campaign alive.
A Historic Achievement in the Making
Sooryavanshi stands on the verge of another historic achievement. If he makes his debut during the upcoming T20I series, he will become the youngest male cricketer to represent India, which would go on to break the long-standing record that has been held for nearly four decades.
